Scott Glysson in Kenya

Kenya 2019

This past September, I traveled to Kenya as a U.S. representative in the American Choral Directors Association International Conductors Exchange Program. Highlights of the trip include running a conducting workshop for 120 Kenyan choral directors and conducting the first ever all-Kenyan choral/orchestral performance.

Traveling to Africa, and in particular Kenya, was a transforming experience. Before visiting, I had a romanticized image of Africa with majestic animals and beautiful scenery in mind. What I discovered was much, much more. Kenya is a developing country that, by U.S. standards, is quite poor. The people, however, are not poor of spirit. The pride they display for their country and the kindness they show to everyone around them is inspiring.

After the trip, Kenya’s Permanent Presidential Music Commission, in conjunction with Kenyatta University, invited me and Cal Poly voice students to visit Nairobi for a choral conducting clinic from July 1-8, 2019. The trip would give our voice students the opportunity to work one on one with their peers in Kenya as a form of cultural exchange. However, I need your help to make the trip possible.

Your financial support could help our students experience the wonderful beauty of Africa, including its wonderful wildlife and scenery. More importantly, however, they could visit the places where everyday people live, work and study. They could see the metal roofs and dirt floors, and learn firsthand that Kenyan students often wear a school uniform because it’s the only clothing their family can afford. Our students could also see for themselves that many Kenyan students do not consider themselves poor. Instead, they are immensely grateful for what they have, though it is very little.

Your donation to this special trip could help give Cal Poly students the invaluable opportunity to perform internationally and teach students about western vocal music, but more importantly, you could give them interactions that open their eyes and permanently change them for the better – an experience I was fortunate to have myself.

Your gift of any amount could make an impact. Please consider making a secure gift online. If you prefer to provide a check, please print and fill out our giving form. Mail the form and check to:
